SR-22 is often referred to as a type of insurance, but it actually refers to a form your state may request proving that your auto insurance policy meets minimum liability coverage requirements. In Virginia, SR-22 is also called FR-44. Other states may call it a certificate of financial responsibility.
Who Needs SR-22?
Unless you receive a request from Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles or a judge, you don’t have to worry about filing SR-22. If you must file the form, you’ll receive written notice. You may need to file SR-22 under the following circumstances:
-
You have multiple traffic offenses.
-
You were found guilty of a serious traffic offense.
-
Your license was revoked or suspended, and you’d like to reinstate it.
-
You caused an accident and did not have insurance.
-
You were convicted of driving under the influence (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI).
How Much Is SR-22?
The fee for filing an SR-22 form varies by state. Additionally, your insurer may charge a small fee to file the form, depending on their rules.
Auto insurance premiums are set using information about you, your vehicle, your claims history and your driving record. After a serious traffic offense, license revocation or suspension, a DUI conviction or multiple traffic offenses, expect your insurance premiums to rise.
You don’t need to wait until you have a good driving record to shop around for auto insurance. Talk with your agent to learn more about how to get the auto coverage you need. If you don’t have a vehicle registered in your name, non owner liability insurance may be a good fit for your situation.
